Leuk gedaan!
TANK INFO: Matiza The Vase Reef Created Dec.2012 Officially Debut on YouTube - Jan 1. 2013 (Originally an experiment to prove that Instant Ocean and LED's can grow Corals)
We named her Maritza The Vase Reef on Jan.1 2013 Originally, it was going to be a Fish Bowl Reef, like I also have now.
But I was inspired by a video on YouTube by Brandon429..Very important to mention this!!! If it were not for Brandon, there would be no Maritza The Vase Reef.
I saw his Vase Reef at the time, couldn't believe it and decided to use his concept for the experiment. But I challenged his design, against his recommendation, and used a shorter vase, I later purchased at a Thrift Store for $3.00 Vintage 1.25 gal. Thick Glass Vase 3" Live Sand Australian 3 lbs. Fiji Live Rock 25w Thermostat Heater ( Don't use since it's warm at home) Instant Ocean Regular Salt Mix Whisper 800 Dial Pump, Air Line Tubing, Air Line Tubing Suction Cups Check Valve Bow Cover for the Vase 12 W ABI LED 50/50 Par38 Bulb (14" above water line) Temp. 76-79 (depending on the climate) Use R.O. Water, but I"ve used Distilled in the past. Mix the water 24 hrs before use via air stone Feed Corals once a week and in that day, we feed and wait 2-4 hrs before the 50-90% Water Change, Same S.G. @ 1.025 and Same Temp.@77-80 degrees, depending on the temp in the Vase Reef that day. We feed Mysis for Target Feeding certain LPS Corals, Kent Phytoplanton, once a month, 2 drops, and Albert Thiel's Powder Capsule Phytoplankton, mixed with some vase water. We use this once a month also. Lights are on for 9-11 hrs. Depending on the Season. Maritza The Vase Reef is going on 4 years this Jan.1 She sits on a Lazy Susan type turntable. This allows Me to take a look all around and makes for easier maintenance. I use a Nano Mag for hard to get areas, given to me. I top off once a week since it's covered and the evaporation is slow, giving me anywhere from 4-5 days and the S.G. only rising .05. That's pretty stable. When I top off, I use R.O. water and will slowly, gravity drip at 1 drop per second, until reaches the water line marked off on the back of the Vase Reef. I went with a low budget LED, to show that even with the minimal equipment and cost, it would be possible to own and care for a beautiful Reef. We keep no fish in here. We do have 1 hermit crab for almost 3 years now and she does a fantastic job keeping the nuisance algae out, if ever. I've never had any problems with Nuisance Algae, or Micro type on the glass. We have over 28 different types of Corals in this Vase Reef. LPS,SPS,Octocoral, Sponges, Feather Dusters, Softies, etc.. There are around 12 Red Strip Micro Starfish in there, Plenty of Bristle Worms, not a problem at all. a Pr. of Stomatella Snails. Coraline Algae grows but I scrape off on the visible part of the viewing glass. The lights are on a Auto Timer. I've been in the field for over 40 years. I've kept huge Reef Tanks and will never go back to one. Now I have my little simple enjoyable reef here, without busting my pockets, time, space, bills, etc.. No pipes, no drilling, no bunch of cords all over, Simple. Just Feed, Top Off, Water Changes, and growing out Corals a certain size, before constant fragging and or trading. I've never lost a Coral in this Vase Reef. I did have in the past, a Nudibranch problem that came with a Montip Cap and I immediately removed the frag. I also added more Micro Stars and I think they've eaten most of the pest, if any. I Dip All Corals!! I use the Seachem Dip and I usually remove the Corals from all the frag plugs and add my own or on the rock directly. I do keep the ceiling fan on in the hotter months and that does wonders to keep the Vase Reef at acceptable levels. I did have Red Macro Algae growing in there at one time, but it grew fast and was annoying the Corals when it touched them. So I eliminate it. The Whisper pump has a Control Dial, so it allows us to control the flow withing the Vase Reef. I've used Ceramic Air Stones, but it creates too much bubbles and foam on the surface , causing the vase to become sort of a Skimmer. So I only run the tubing directly, attached to the tubing suction cups and that gave us great wave action on top, great water movement throughout the entire Vase Reef, and the up and down seems more natural for the Corals and they like it.
